We noticed that contactSearch API is only called for calls but not called for initiating outbound emails and SMS interactions. Was this missed and/or planned for a future release? Ideally the API would send the interaction type along with the search value for the PEF implementer to correctly search and return relevant values.

You are correct that it is only called on phone interaction types, which is generally implied in the documentation here: https://developer.mypurecloud.com/api/embeddable-framework/configMethods/contactSearch.html
Note that only phone numbers are ever referenced in either the search criteria or the returned object.
Updating this to include email or sms targets would be a feature enhancement. I'll be sure to note your interest in this feature for future consideration.
Thanks for the confirmation. I interpreted it that way as well when reviewing it but didn't want to make assumptions and additionally find out if there were other things already planned. I have moved this request to Ideas.
