Test Drive - have you been able to make it work? Alternatives?

I can't possibly be the only person who has tried to use the Test Drive and have found issues that render it unusable. Has anyone else been able to make it work? Is it a matter of region? I cannot get past step 1 where it says to hit the "deploy" button. There is no button to be found! I have called into customer service describing my issue at length, and days later, still no response. Very frustrating.

Oh well, I get it. It's a new product, probably some bugs to work out. Moving on.

I am looking for suggestions on how to get started with the platform, make api calls to an instance. Is there a sandbox available where I can practice and test making api calls? Do I need to have a full blown account to do so? What options are available to learn the platform?
